Check if you qualify

Two quick questions, two figures off your payslip, and what you already repay. About a minute. The answer is worked out right here in your browser — nothing is sent until you choose to continue.

First, a few quick questions

Persal lends against a government payroll deduction, so these answers decide whether an application can go anywhere at all — before you dig out a payslip.

Do you work for the South African government?

You will need a valid 8-digit Persal number, since repayments come off your salary.

Are you under debt review, administration or sequestration?

Answer no if none of these apply to you.

Is your post permanent, contract or temporary?

Repayments are deducted from your salary, so the job has to last as long as the loan.

Your income and existing credit

R

The bigger of the two figures. Your full salary before anything is taken off — on your payslip it is the total earnings line near the top, before PAYE, UIF, pension and medical aid.

R

The smaller of the two figures. Your take-home pay — the amount that actually lands in your bank account on payday. On your payslip it is the bottom line, usually marked net pay.

Monthly debt repaymentsOnly what applies

Count only credit repayments that leave your bank account after your net salary.

are calculated automatically from your salary and already cover rent, groceries, transport and other day-to-day costs, so leave those out.

Nothing entered, so the check treats you as having no other credit — which is fine if that is the case. If you do repay something each month, add it above: leaving it out would quote you a limit you cannot actually afford.

Repayment term

A longer term means smaller repayments, so a budget that cannot carry one month may carry three.

This is an indication, not an offer of credit or a credit decision. Persal assesses affordability in full when you apply, using a three-month bank statement and your PERSAL payslip, and lends only to South African government employees with a valid Persal number.
